Department of English – Tenure Track

The Department of English at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) invites applications for a full time, tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor beginning August 2018. The department seeks a teacher-scholar with proven expertise in critical approaches to language teaching.

The IUP English Department’s commitment to broad faculty participation in the Liberal Studies offerings requires that all faculty are prepared to teach first-year college writing, research writing, introductory humanities literature, as well as courses in language studies. Active participation in departmental service and student advising is also expected.

Position Qualifications
Ph.D in English or related discipline is required by time of appointment. In addition to expertise and scholarship in the specified field, all candidates must have documented training and experience in teaching composition, proven excellence in teaching, and a demonstrated commitment to service. Candidates must communicate effectively and perform well during the interview process, which may include a teaching demonstration. The successful candidate may be asked to work at off-campus sites and/or provide instruction through distance education.

Candidates must be qualified to teach doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate courses and must demonstrate excellence in teaching and scholarship. Participation in the graduate program also includes teaching graduate students during the summer session (with additional compensation).

The candidate must be an applied linguist who understands, researches, and publishes on the complexities in literacies and can apply these to second language considerations. Specialization in language socialization, language ideologies, and/or language globalization is also required. Knowledge of critical theory and L1 composition are considered as advantages, as is evidence of leadership ability and grant writing ability. A proven record of publication is a requirement.

The IUP English Department is interested in candidates who have the communication skills and cross-cultural abilities to maximize their effectiveness with diverse groups of students, colleagues and community members.

Qualifications:
The work of this position occurs in a typical office environment. Although infrequent, periods of heavy exertion may occur. Incumbent must have the following abilities:

  • Ability to travel to field locations and meeting/training sites by motor vehicle when required.
  • Communicate both orally and in writing to issue, receive and carry out instructions and orders effectively and to convey information to a variety of co-workers and the general public.
  • Use a variety of common office machines such as telephones, calculators, copiers, computer terminals, keyboards, video display terminals, auxiliary printers and similar equipment.
  • Perform manual duties such as lifting and carrying various weight limits.
  • Operate office equipment which may require stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching and prolonged standing.
  • Provide assistance and guidance to internal and external customers.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
