Job Number: 2007912

Description:

Do you want to help grow Carnegie Mellon University’s First-Year Writing Program? The Department of English is looking for an Assistant Director of First-Year Writing to join us.

About First-Year Writing

The First-Year Writing (FYW) Program in the Department of English provides the foundational writing curriculum for all freshmen (1600+ students), offering 90+ sections during the academic year. First-year Writing courses offer some of the smallest classes that our undergraduates experience, particularly in their beginning semesters at Carnegie Mellon. Because of these smaller classes and the fact that FYW courses supply an education foundation for all undergraduates, the courses serve as a unique space for students as they negotiate the transition from High School to University.

In this role, you will work closely with the Director of First-Year Writing to provide vision and operational support for a growing program that is currently undergoing significant curricular and administrative restructuring. It is an exciting time for First-Year Writing and you will be instrumental in the program’s future expansion and success.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assess and improve the program relentlessly through data analysis and reporting
  • Research, collaborate on, and execute initiatives with the Director of First Year Writing
  • Actively work to preserve the program’s memory by maintaining program files in an organized manner and making processes transparent for instructors and students
  • Handle complex communication between advisors, enrollment administrators, instructors, and students
  • Design a successful program infrastructure by soliciting preferences from freshman advisors across all colleges regarding registration needs, negotiating teaching preferences from instructors, and flexibly and creatively accommodating programmatic differences across college divisions
  • Schedule FYW courses, edit and publish course descriptions, and coordinate meetings for instructors
  • Assist students in finding open seats in sections, handle the waitlist concerns of students, advisors, and instructors
  • Act as a liaison for FYW; represent the program to the university community and cultivate positive relationships with partners across Carnegie Mellon
  • Run the summer placement process of incoming freshman ESL (English as a Second Language) students
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of the vision and mission of the program, and carry it out
  • Develop and maintain all communication about the program, including website content.
  • Assist the office manager in planning First-Year Writing events, and contribute general administrative coverage in the office, greeting visitors, answering the phone.

You will work daily with students, administrators, and teachers. If you are a dedicated and positive individual who can work well independently but also thrives in a friendly and collegial team environment, we want to hear from you. We have high standards for support, collaboration and accountability in First-Year Writing.

Qualifications:

  • 3 or more years higher education experience, including working experience with students and faculty in an academic setting; program assessment experience preferred.
  • Superb writing and proofreading skills
  • Strong communication skills, able to work with students every day
  • Independent; self-starter for short-term, middle-term, and long-term projects
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills
  • Handles multiple projects at a time
  • Delivers projects on time; communicates and coordinates timelines and processes
  • Strong financial management skills, able to work with the Business Manager to track the FYW Budget
  • Outstanding skills in written and oral communication, reasoning, problem-solving, analytical and organizational by nature
  • Has a high level of integrity and is dependable and respectful
  • Experience working with student information system databases. Familiarity with web based applications such as Blackboard. Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, G Suite, and Adobe Suite. Classroom teaching experience a plus
  • A bachelor’s degree in English, Higher Education, any related field, or sufficient related training and experience
  • A Master’s Degree is preferred but not required
  • Passionate about benchmarking, data collection, and program assessment as a way to improve existing programs
  • Able to maintain in-depth knowledge of the First-Year Writing Program, Policies, and Procedures
  • Ability to work after hours and on weekends when needed
