TITLE: Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor of English

SUMMARY OF POSITION: Do you like to teach outside of the traditional confines of period focused classes? Are you interested in creating fresh, inventive courses that strive for a thematic approach or include media studies? If so, Dickinson State University wants you to join the Language and Literature Department. We are seeking a nine-month tenure-track assistant/associate professor in American literature with secondary interests in interdisciplinary studies, Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)/Writing in the Disciplines (WID), and/or digital humanities. The course load is 12 credits per semester or 24 credits per academic year and may involve traveling to the university’s sites in Bismarck or Williston, teaching via interactive video, or teaching online.

Courses will include composition, general education, and upper-level American literature. This position offers the opportunity to provide outstanding academic advising to English majors, contribute to university committees, and engage in research and self-improvement activities. We seek applicants who enjoy collaborating and are eager to join us in improving our programs and advancing in our mission to serve students at our university and citizens throughout the region.

This provides the opportunity to become part of a department of supportive faculty who plan to revise their curriculum to integrate traditional literary approaches with innovative ones that will excite students and teach them practical applications of critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. Or in other words, so students will have a good answer when people ask them, “So what are you going to do with that degree”?

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: This position reports to the Chair of the Department of Language and Literature

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Earned doctorate in English

· All academic degrees from regionally accredited institutions

· Demonstrated excellence in teaching

· Good interpersonal and organizational skills, flexibility, and a strong work ethic

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Expertise in interdisciplinary studies, Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)/Writing in the Disciplines (WID), and/or digital humanities

· Experience with assessment at course, program, and university levels

COMPENSATION: Includes a salary of $52,000 – 55,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience; and a comprehensive fringe benefit package, including employer-paid full-family coverage health insurance, TIAA retirement, tuition waiver benefits and much more.

STARTING DATE: August 13, 2018

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

· Provide instruction in the various American literature and composition courses offered by DSU.
o Teaching effectiveness includes 1) teaching of assigned class loads, 2) making appropriate preparations for the semester including syllabus preparation, preparation of lecture, preparation of tests and assignments as needed/appropriate, revising course materials when needed, and providing measurable objectives for student performance, 3) act as a professional role model to students, 4) communicate effectively with students, 5) arrive at class punctually and use class time effectively, 6) stay current in field of expertise, 7) be available to and provide assistance to students, and 8) other teaching duties as assigned or noted by supervisor.
§ Physical demands include the ability to stand or otherwise be present in a classroom during class time, the ability to move to students to provide assistance in the class, and the abilities to speak and listen.

· The individual in this position is expected to participate in scholarly activities and self-improvement.
o These activities may include, but are not limited to, 1) evaluation and selection of materials for classroom activities, 2) professional reading and/or research for self-improvement and effectiveness 3) continuing education, including experiential learning, 4) publishing in the outlets of professional organizations, 5) conference, workshop, convention and seminar attendance 6) presentations at professional conferences, workshops, conventions and/or seminars, 7) consultant work, 8) creation of new courses, and 9) review of commercial and professional curriculum materials.

· The individual in this position is expected to make on-campus contributions to the university.
o Activities in this category may include but are not limited to 1) academic advising of students, 2) serving on committees, 3) attending university functions, and 4) advising student organizations.

· The individual in this position is expected to make off-campus contributions to the university.
o Activities in this category may include but are not limited to 1) making speeches/giving presentations to community groups, 2) organizing and/or working with community organizations, 3) belonging to or holding office in community organizations, 4) seeking or holding governmental office or working on behalf of governmental candidates and/or organizations, 5) serving on advisory boards, and 6) serving western North Dakota as a resource within the area of expertise.
