Western Washington University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Music, beginning Fall 2018. We seek a candidate with excellent general teaching abilities and an active career as a composer. The applicant will specialize in music composition and music theory. Additional courses may be assigned pursuant to the successful applicant’s strengths. The music theory curriculum serves as the first point of contact between the Music Department and its majors and minors, and as such, the candidate must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.
About the College/Department:
The College of Fine and Performing Arts is composed of the departments of Art/Art History, Design, Music, and Theatre and Dance, housed in eight buildings with five performance spaces, including a Performing Arts Center overlooking Bellingham Bay. The College is also home to the Western Gallery and Public Art Collection, one of the top ten outdoor sculpture collections in the country.
The Department of Music offers BM, BA and NM degrees to approximately 180 majors. The faculty consists of 39 full and part-time faculty. The department serves as a focal point for the campus and the regional community through collaboration, participation and leadership in music performance and instruction.

Position Responsibilities:
Teach undergraduate and graduate composition; teach other courses as assigned, such as core and advanced theory courses and aural skills; teach graduate theory courses and history seminars on specific topics of interest may also be part of the teaching load; and engage in research/scholarly/creative activity. The specific teaching load and responsibilities will reflect the candidate’s skill-set and departmental needs.
Service:
The ideal candidate will work with faculty to engage in recruiting and outreach in Washington State and across the region, and actively participate in faculty governance and university service.
Required Qualifications:
Terminal degree (D.M., D.M.A., or Ph.D.) in music composition or music theory at the time of hire; evidence of successful teaching experience at the college level; demonstrated excellence in music composition, with strong evidence of an active, engaged compositional career; demonstrated ability or willingness to cultivate learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds; strong keyboard skills suitable for classroom teaching; excellent interpersonal skills; and excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Teaching experience in music composition, music theory, and music history in the field of specialty at the college level, and experience with media scoring, the creation of electro-acoustic music, and/or involvement with other forms of music technology.
