As part of its programme to provide post-doctoral research opportunities for scholars of proven academic excellence, University College Dublin invites applications for a prestigious Newman Fellowship in Creativity.
The Fellowship is designed for a creative thinker, writer and researcher who has the capacity to work flexibly across creative and critical modes in their research activities, and to take ideas in new and unexpected directions that will challenge existing ways of thinking. They should demonstrate the desire to make a real difference in our understanding of the role of creativity and writing in contemporary Irish culture and society and beyond, and the ways in which increased mobility of people and things has produced new forms of writing. Applications are invited from candidates who hold a PhD in literary studies, creative writing or a related field. They should be practicing writers with a record of creative publications in any genre, as well as strong outputs in literary research and scholarship. The ideal candidate will provide evidence of knowledge of the relationships between modern and contemporary writing and recent geographical concerns with space and mobility or related ideas of landscape and place. They must have archival research skills, particularly in relation to exploring the contexts of the lives of writers from diverse backgrounds. They will also need to provide evidence of the ability to work with material and ideas from a number of disciplines and have a strong grasp of current debates in literary studies. A knowledge of recent writing from Ireland, and a desire to further develop expertise in this area, would significantly strengthen an application.
The John Pollard Newman Fellowship in Creativity is tenable for two years. The successful applicant will be based in the UCD School of English, Drama and Film. Renowned for its dedication to innovative research, creativity and teaching, the School is ranked number 45 by QS World Rankings 2018 which positions the School as the leading School in Ireland, and the 14th in Europe. It has also long been associated with some of Ireland’s greatest writers, including James Joyce, Flann O’Brien, Mary Lavin, Anthony Cronin, Maeve Binchy, John McGahern, Neil Jordan, Conor McPherson, Colm Tóibín, Joseph O’Connor, Emma Donoghue and many others. The distinguished playwright, Frank McGuinness, recently retired as Professor of Creative Writing, and internationally acclaimed novelist, Colm Tóibín is Adjunct Professor. The School will soon welcome Anne Enright who will be joining as Professor of Fiction in September 2018.
